What is a lip balm display box?

A lip balm display box is a small counter display designed for the tiniest products in a shop. Sticks, tins and tubes are easy to knock over and easy to lose among other items, so the display holds each one in a slot, a cell or a stepped row. A printed header above tells people what the balm is, and often what flavour or benefit each row offers.

Done well, a lip balm display looks like a small shop window: neat, colourful and easy to pick from.

For many small skincare brands, the lip balm is the product that gets them into a shop for the first time, because it is cheap to try and easy to stock. The display that holds it becomes the brand's first impression in that shop, so it deserves the same care as the balm itself.

Which lip balm display styles are there?

Stepped displays suit sticks; partition trays suit tins; slotted trays suit both sticks and gloss tubes.

  • Stepped display with header: rows rise towards the back so every stick is visible.
  • Slotted tray: a top sheet with round holes holds sticks or tubes upright.
  • Partition tray: cells for tins and pots, with a header at the back.
  • Display with backing cards: each balm on its own small card standing in a tray.

If you sell more than one format, for example sticks and tins, a combined display with holes at the back and cells at the front keeps the whole range together in one footprint.

Where do lip balm displays sell?

Pharmacies, gift shops, garden centres, farm shops, outdoor shops, salons, hotels and cafés. Lip balm sells all year round and at every price point, which makes it a natural till product for shops that would not otherwise carry beauty items.

If your balms hang on pegs as well, look at hanging display cards with a euro slot for the same product.

Outdoor and walking shops are a good fit for balms with sun protection or for cold weather, and cafés often take a small display when the brand is local.

How many balms should one display hold?

Two to four dozen is common: enough to look full, not so many that the display takes up half the counter. Several small rows look better than a few long ones because each flavour gets its own space. We size the display to your count and show it on the proof.

A display that holds exactly the number in your trade pack makes ordering easy for the shop: one pack fills one display, and they know to reorder when it is empty.

Which board suits a lip balm display?

E flute for stepped displays and trays with a header; white or kraft card for small slotted trays. Kraft suits natural and handmade brands; white card suits bright, colourful ones.

Doubling the top sheet of a slotted tray keeps the holes round and firm after many weeks of sticks going in and out.

How should a lip balm display be printed?

With large type. The header needs your brand and a word or two about the product, readable from the till queue. Each row or slot can carry the flavour in small print. Use the inside of the tray for colour so the display looks bright even when half empty.

Kraft board printed in one or two dark colours gives a crafted look; white board in full colour gives a bright, commercial look.

Small balms are often bought as gifts, so a line on the header suggesting that, or a price point where the shop allows it, can help people decide.

Small products, big header

Lip balms are tiny on a counter. The header does the job of being seen, so we usually make it larger in proportion than on other displays.

How do we size a lip balm display?

Measure sticks with the cap on, since that is how they will stand.

  1. Send the diameter and height of a stick, or the size of a tin or tube.
  2. Tell us how many of each flavour and how many flavours.
  3. Say whether products stand, lie, or sit on backing cards.
  4. We set rows, slot sizes and the step height.
  5. The free proof shows the display full size.

How tight should the slots be?

Snug enough that a stick stands straight, loose enough that it lifts out with one hand. We add a small clearance to the size you send. Tins sit in cells rather than holes, with a little space around them so fingers can get in.

Gloss tubes are slimmer and taller than sticks and can wobble in a shallow hole. For tubes we use a deeper tray or a second support sheet so they stand straight.

What about the footprint?

Lip balm displays usually live right next to the till, so a small footprint matters. Stepped displays use height instead of width, which keeps the base small. If you know the shop's counter, tell us the space and we fit the display to it.

A display that is narrow and deep usually fits a till area better than one that is wide and shallow, because card machines and bag hooks take the width.

Flavour labels

Print the flavour under each row or slot. It helps shoppers choose and helps staff refill the right place.

How do I order lip balm display boxes?

Send the product size, the count and the number of displays. We email a price within one working day and then a free proof. Printing begins once the proof is approved and takes 5 to 7 working days. Before you finalise the header, read tips for headers that read clearly.

How do lip balm displays arrive?

Flat in cartons, ready to fold and fill. They travel by tracked courier, free to any UK mainland address, and arrive 2 to 3 working days after dispatch. Report any misprints or damage within 10 days and we reprint or refund them.

Because these displays are small, many brands order a few spare to replace tired ones in busy shops.
