What is a display box insert?

An insert is a piece of card or corrugated board that sits inside a display or a box and holds each item in place. It might be a sheet with holes cut to the shape of your bottles, a grid that splits a tray into cells, a raised platform that lifts small products closer to a window, or simple strips that separate flavours.

Inserts are what make a display look intentional. Without them, products slide, lean and tip; with them, every item sits exactly where it was designed to.

They also protect products in transit. A display that ships full, or a gift box that is posted, arrives with every item where it should be because the insert stops them moving inside the box.

Which insert types do we make?

Each type can be combined; for example a raised platform with a die cut top sheet.

  • Die cut insert: a sheet with cut outs shaped to each product, from round holes to custom outlines.
  • Grid divider: interlocking strips that make a grid of cells.
  • Raised platform: a folded support that lifts products to the right height.
  • Partition strips: simple dividers that split a tray into lanes.

For mixed bundles, a combination insert can hold a jar, a small bottle and an extra such as a spoon or brush, each in its own shaped cut out, so the bundle looks deliberate when opened.

When does a display need an insert?

When products are round and roll, when they are tall and tip, when they are glass and knock together, when you sell several flavours that must stay apart, or when the display has a window and the product needs lifting into view. Almost every cosmetic display box with compartments relies on an insert.

Inserts also help the shop. When each item has a place, staff can see at a glance what has sold and what to refill.

Can you make inserts for boxes I already have?

Yes. Send the inside size of your box, or a sample, and the products that go inside. We draw an insert that fits both and send a proof. This is common for brands that already have outer boxes but want a better presentation inside, or want to turn a plain box into a counter display.

Measure inside, not outside. The thickness of the board means the outside of a box can be several millimetres larger than the space inside, and an insert sized to the outside will not fit.

Which board is used for inserts?

White or kraft card for light products and neat, thin inserts. E flute for heavier products, deeper cut outs and inserts that have to take knocks in transit.

For inserts that hold heavy items near the top of a deep box, a folded support underneath stops the insert sagging and keeps products level.

Should the insert be printed?

If it will be seen, usually yes. When a display is opened or a box lid lifted, the insert is the first thing seen around the products. A brand colour or a simple pattern makes the whole package feel finished. Hidden supports and dividers inside shipping cases can stay plain to save cost.

Matt lamination on a dark insert looks premium; uncoated kraft looks natural.

Printing the insert also gives you space for a short message, such as how to use a kit or a thank you note, visible as soon as the box is opened.

Send a box if you have one

If the insert is for a box you already use, send its inside measurements or a sample. Inside size matters more than outside.

How do we size an insert?

  1. Send the inside size of the display or box.
  2. Send each product's size, including caps and lids.
  3. Tell us the layout: how many of each and where.
  4. We draw the insert with cut outs, folds and clearances.
  5. The proof shows the insert full size so you can test it with real products.

If you are not sure of the layout, send the products and the box and ask us to suggest one. We place items so the most important one sits in the centre and the box still closes easily.

How tight should a cut out be?

Tight enough to hold, loose enough to lift out with one hand. For glass we keep the fit snug to stop movement; for soft packs a looser fit avoids crushing. If products vary slightly, size to the largest.

Cut outs also need finger room. A small notch at the side of each hole lets people lift items out without tipping the whole insert.

Can one insert hold different shapes?

Yes. A single die cut sheet can hold a bottle, a jar and a tube side by side, each in its own shaped cut out. That is how sample kits and gift bundles are usually built.

When an insert holds many different items, a printed outline or name beside each cut out makes repacking easy for staff or customers.

Print the insert

A printed insert in a brand colour makes an opened display or gift box look finished. Plain inserts are cheaper and fine for hidden supports.

How do I order display box inserts?

Send box size, product sizes and quantity. We email a price within one working day, followed by a free proof. Production takes 5 to 7 working days after approval, and inserts ordered with a display are cut on the same run. Read how we size a counter display if you are designing both together.

Inserts for an existing box can be ordered on their own, without a display, and the same low minimums apply.

How are inserts delivered?

Inserts ship flat or pre-folded, packed with their displays if ordered together. Delivery is free and tracked to UK mainland addresses and arrives 2 to 3 working days after dispatch. Inserts reported misprinted or damaged within 10 days are reprinted or refunded.

Spare inserts are useful if you repack displays or gift boxes yourself, so many customers order a few more inserts than boxes.
