What is a counter display box?

A counter display box is a small printed tray that stands beside the till and holds a row or two of one product. It usually arrives at the shop filled and closed. The shop assistant opens it, folds the lid back into a header card, and the display is ready in seconds without tape or extra parts.

Because it sits where people wait to pay, it does a different job from your shelf packaging. It has to catch a glance from someone standing a metre away, keep every pack upright until the last one sells, and take up so little room that the shop is happy to keep it there.

Which counter display styles do we make?

Most orders use one of four builds, and each can be cut to your product.

  • Tuck front with header card: the everyday style, with a raised back panel for your logo and a low front lip.
  • Fold back lid: the box ships as a closed carton and the lid becomes the header when opened.
  • Stepped tiers: two or three rows at different heights so the back row is never hidden.
  • Open tray with die cut header: the header is cut to the shape of your logo, a character or a product outline.

Where do counter displays sell best?

They suit anything small that people buy on impulse or try for the first time: sachets, bars, balms, sample sizes, keyrings, single sheet masks. Cafés, pharmacies, farm shops, gift shops, salons and petrol station kiosks all give counter space to displays that look tidy and earn their spot.

If your product is heavier or taller, a cardboard display stand with tiers may suit the counter better than a single tray.

Why do shops agree to keep a counter display?

A shop owner judges a counter display on three things: does it sell, does it stay tidy, and does it get in the way. A display that is cut to the product keeps packs standing in neat rows even when half of them have gone, so it never looks like a shoebox of leftovers. A narrow footprint leaves room for the card machine and the bag hook. And a clear header tells the customer what the product is and why they might want it, which saves the assistant from explaining it.

If you sell through wholesalers or reps, a well made display also makes the first order easier to win. The shop is buying a ready made selling point rather than loose stock they have to find a place for.

Which board suits a counter display?

We choose the board from what the display will carry and how often it will be handled.

Printing the header and front lip

The header carries your logo and one short message, so it should be readable from the queue. The front lip carries the product name or a simple call to try it. We print full colour on the outside and can print the inside too, which matters on an open display because the inner walls show from above.

Matt lamination keeps glare down under shop lighting and hides fingerprints. Gloss makes colour pop. A spot UV logo on a matt header is a common choice when you want one detail to catch the light.

Print both faces

Once the lid folds back, the inside walls of a counter display are on show. Printing them in a brand colour costs little and stops the open box looking like a plain carton.

How do we size a counter display?

We work outwards from a single pack, then check the result against the counter it is going on.

  1. Measure one pack: width, depth and height in mm.
  2. Decide the layout: packs in a row, number of rows, standing or lying.
  3. We add a little clearance so packs slide out easily but do not lean.
  4. We set the front lip low enough to show the packs and high enough to hold them.
  5. We set the header height so it clears the packs and stays readable.
  6. The proof shows the finished outer size so you can check it fits the counter.

How many items should one display hold?

Fewer than you might think. A display that empties quickly gets refilled or reordered; one that stays half full for weeks starts to look tired and gets moved. For most impulse lines, a single display holds between one and three rows. If you sell several flavours or colours, dividers keep each one in its own lane so the display still looks neat when it is half empty.

What about the outer footprint?

Small shops have very little counter. Ask the shop, or measure a typical till area, and tell us the maximum width and depth you can use. We then work the layout to fit inside it, sometimes by turning packs sideways or adding a second tier instead of a wider tray.

We also check the weight of a full display. A tray that is easy to lift with one hand is easier for staff to move when they wipe the counter, and it is less likely to be pushed to the back.

Measure one pack

Lay one pack on a ruler and note width, depth and height in mm. Add how many you want in a row and how many rows. That is enough for a first price.

What happens after you send your sizes?

You get a price per box by email within one working day, with the board and print we have allowed for. Once you are happy, a designer draws the dieline to your size and lays your artwork on it for a free proof. Printing starts after you approve, and production takes 5 to 7 working days.

If you have not designed the artwork yet, read our header card design tips before you start.

How do the displays arrive?

Counter displays usually ship flat in outer cartons, ready for you to fill. If you are sending displays to several shops, tell us and we can quote packing them in smaller cartons. Your order travels free by tracked courier to any UK mainland address, arriving 2 to 3 working days after it leaves us. Check one carton on arrival; any misprint or damage you report within 10 days is reprinted or refunded.

Counter Display Boxes FAQs

More answers in Help

How much do counter display boxes cost?

They start from £0.25 a box. Size, board, print, finish and quantity set the final price, which we email within one working day.

Can a counter display ship closed and open into a display?

Yes. The fold back lid style travels as a closed carton and the lid becomes the header card when the shop opens it.

Which board do most counter displays use?

E flute corrugated. It is stiff, light and gives a smooth surface for full colour print.

Will the display hold jars or bottles?

Yes, with a stronger base or B flute board. Tell us the product weight when you ask for a price.

Can the header be cut to a shape?

Yes. We can die cut the header to your logo outline, a character or a simple arch.

Can I have dividers for different flavours?

Yes. Card dividers or a die cut insert keep each flavour or colour in its own lane.

Do counter displays need tape to build?

No. Our counter displays lock together with tabs and fold back without tape.

What header height suits a counter display?

Tall enough to clear the packs and carry your logo, usually about a third of the display height. The proof shows it to scale.

Can you print the inside of the display?

Yes. Inside print is worth it on counter displays because shoppers look down into the tray.

How many displays can I order?

Minimums are low and quoted per job, so you can order a small run for a few shops or a larger run for a roll out.

What if a counter display arrives damaged?

Tell us within 10 days of delivery with a photo. We reprint or refund the damaged displays.
