What is a cardboard display stand?

A cardboard display stand is a printed corrugated unit with two or more steps, each holding a row of product, and a tall back panel that carries your branding. It stands on a counter, a table or a low shelf, and lifts the products so the back row is as visible as the front.

Compared with a single tray, a stand gives you height. That height is what catches the eye in a busy shop and what lets you show a range rather than a single line.

Stands also give a small brand a sense of presence. On a crowded counter, a stand with a well printed back panel looks like a planned piece of merchandising rather than a box someone found space for, and that impression helps when a shop is deciding whether to stock a second line.

Which stand styles are there?

Every style is cut to your products, and the tiers can be different depths if your range mixes sizes.

  • Stepped stand with back panel: the classic build, two to four steps rising towards a printed board.
  • Tiered counter stand: shorter and more compact, for till areas.
  • Stand with a shaped header: the back panel is cut to a logo, a product outline or a simple curve.
  • Stand with pegs or slots: holes or hooks in the back panel for hanging items above the steps.

When should I choose a stand instead of a counter box?

Choose a stand when you sell several products or sizes, when your products are taller than they are wide, or when the brand needs a big panel to tell its story. A counter box suits a single impulse line with very little room. If the stand will go on the floor, look at free standing floor display units instead, which are built to a different height and strength.

Where do stands work best?

Salons, pharmacies, gift shops, garden centre tills, stationers and trade shows. Anywhere with a table or a wide counter. Stands are also good for launches because the back panel can carry a new product image or message, then be reprinted for the next campaign while the base design stays the same.

At trade shows, stands are often used in pairs: one with stock for sale and one with testers. The same dieline can be printed twice with different back panels, which keeps costs down.

Which board does a stand need?

Light products sit happily on E flute. Bottles, jars and anything with weight need B flute or a stand with internal supports under each step.

How should a stand be printed?

The back panel is the billboard: logo, product image and one short message. The step fronts are small strips that can carry product names or prices if the shop allows. Sides are visible when the stand is at the end of a counter, so print them too. Matt lamination keeps the back panel readable under spotlights, and a spot UV logo adds a small detail that catches the eye.

If the stand will be seen from behind, print the reverse of the back panel as well.

Weight per tier

Tell us roughly what each tier will carry. Bottles and jars need a stiffer step than cards or pens, and we size the board and supports to match.

How do we size a stand?

  1. Send the size of each product and how many of each should be on show.
  2. Tell us the space: counter width and depth, and any height limit from a shelf above.
  3. We set the number of steps and the depth and rise of each one.
  4. We size the back panel to sit above the top row without crowding it.
  5. The proof shows the stand from the front and the side with your artwork.

Remember that people take products from the front. If the front step is too deep, the front row hides the one behind it; if it is too shallow, products fall forward when someone lifts their neighbour. We set each step to about the depth of one or two products.

How tall should the back panel be?

It depends on the space above the counter. A panel that stands well clear of the products reads best, but a panel that hits a shelf gets bent or removed. Measure the clearance where possible. If the stand is for several shops, design for the tightest space and we can add a separate header extension for shops with more room.

As a starting point, a panel that rises about the same height again above the top row reads well from a metre away without dominating the counter.

Yes. We set each step to its product's height and depth, so a stand might hold tall bottles at the back, small tubes in the middle and sachets at the front. Dividers on a step keep colours or flavours apart.

Will the stand tip when products are taken?

A stand loaded heavily at the top and front can tip forward as the lower rows empty. We prevent that by keeping the heaviest products on the lowest step, widening the base where the counter allows, and adding a weighted or folded foot inside the base for tall stands. The proof notes where the weight should go so the person filling the stand gets it right.

Two sided back panels

On a table in the middle of a shop, the back of the stand is seen too. Print both sides and the stand works from every direction.

How do I order cardboard display stands?

Send product sizes, tier count and quantity. We reply with a price by email within one working day and then a free proof. Production takes 5 to 7 working days after approval. Stands are a good place for strong artwork, so take a look at header card design tips before you finalise the back panel.

How do stands arrive?

Flat packed in outer cartons, with each stand's parts together and a simple build guide printed inside. They fold up with locking tabs and no tape. Our courier delivery is tracked and free to the UK mainland, usually in 2 to 3 working days. Misprints or damage reported within 10 days are reprinted or refunded.
