Display Boxes with Lids

A closed shipping box and a counter display in one: the lid protects the stock on the way, then folds back to become the printed header.

Often Used For

  • Chocolate and protein bars
  • Soap bars and bath products
  • Gum, mints and sweets
  • Single serve snack packs
  • Sachets of drinks and sauces
  • Small electronics accessories

If it ships in a case and sells from a counter, a lidded display usually fits.

How does a display box with a lid work?

You fill the box at your unit or warehouse and close the lid. It travels like any carton, stacked with others, and the lid protects the stock from dust and knocks. At the shop, the assistant opens the lid, folds it back on its hinge and tucks it into a slot so it stands upright behind the products. The inside of the lid, now facing the customer, is printed as the header.

It is one of the most practical display formats because nothing needs building or unpacking. The stock arrives already displayed.

The format also helps the shop count stock. A full box is easy to check at a glance, and when the last pack goes the empty tray folds flat and goes out with the shop's other cartons, leaving no loose display behind.

Which lid styles can you make?

All four can be printed outside for transit and inside for the shop.

  • Fold back lid: a hinged lid that locks upright as a header.
  • Tear off lid: a perforated strip that comes away to leave an open tray with a short front.
  • Four corner tray with hinged lid: a stronger tray glued at the corners, good for heavier packs.
  • Die cut header lid: the lid is cut to a shape so the header has an outline rather than a plain rectangle.

If you are unsure which suits your product, tell us how the boxes will travel and how much counter space the shops have. A pallet of sealed cases favours a strong four corner tray; a parcel to a single café favours a light fold back lid.

Who uses lidded displays?

Brands that pack bars, sweets, single sachets and small toiletries into counts of twelve, twenty four or forty eight. Wholesalers like them because a closed box stacks in a warehouse and goes out with other cases. Shops like them because there is no loose display to find space for and no stock to transfer.

If your product will not be pre-packed, a pop up display that ships flat may cost less.

Brands selling to garages, newsagents and convenience shops find the format especially useful, because those shops buy by the case and expect the case to sell from the counter without any extra work from staff.

What do you need to decide first?

Decide the count per box and how the packs sit: standing on end, lying flat or angled. Then decide whether the lid should stay attached as a header or tear away completely. Those two choices set the box size and the dieline. Everything else, from print to finish, can follow on the proof.

Does a lidded display protect stock in transit?

Better than an open tray. The closed lid keeps dust and moisture off the packs, stops them shifting, and lets cases stack in a van or on a pallet. A tuck lid holds for short trips and courier parcels; for longer journeys or heavier counts we add a lock tab or a perforated tear strip so the box stays sealed until the shop opens it.

If the boxes go into a larger outer carton, the protection doubles and you can often use a lighter board for the display itself.

Which board suits a lidded display?

E flute is the standard: strong enough to stack in cartons, smooth enough for the header print. White card works for small, light counts. Kraft gives a natural look printed in one or two colours.

When boxes travel inside a larger shipper, the outer carton takes most of the knocks and the display can be lighter. When the display box itself is the shipping case, choose E flute at least, and ask us about a stronger base if the count is heavy.

How should the lid be printed?

Think of two jobs. The outside of the closed box needs the product name and count so warehouse staff can find it. The inside of the lid needs the brand and a reason to buy, because it becomes the header. Many brands print a simple outside and spend the colour on the inside. Spot UV or foil on the header logo is a common upgrade.

The inside of the lid matters

Once folded back, the inner face of the lid is the header. That is where the logo goes, so we treat it as the main print panel, not the outside.

How do we size the box and lid?

If you already use an outer case for these packs, send its size as a starting point.

  1. Send the size of one pack and the count per box.
  2. Tell us the layout: rows, standing or lying, angled or flat.
  3. We size the tray with a small clearance so packs do not rattle.
  4. We size the lid so the folded header clears the packs.
  5. The proof shows the box closed and opened.

We also check how the boxes pack into your outer shipper. A display that is a few millimetres too wide for the standard carton wastes space on every delivery, so tell us the shipper size if you have one.

How tall should the header be when the lid folds back?

The header height equals the lid depth plus any extension we add. A taller header reads better from the queue but needs a deeper lid or an extra fold. On the proof we show the header standing at its real height so you can judge it against the packs in front.

Keep the shop in mind as well. Counters in small shops often sit under a shelf or a cigarette gantry, so a very tall header can be folded down by staff. A header that fits the space stays up.

Count per box

Tell us how many units go in one box. We size the tray to that count so packs do not move in transit or lean once opened.

What is the process for ordering?

Send the pack size, count and quantity of boxes. You get a price by email within one working day, then a free proof. Once you approve it, production runs for 5 to 7 working days and the boxes ship flat for you to fill. If you are pitching to a chain, compare counter displays with shelf ready cases first.

For a first order many brands ask for a short run to place with a few shops, then reorder in larger numbers once the format has proved itself. Our minimums are low enough to make that practical.

How do lidded displays reach me?

Flat, banded and boxed in outer cartons. We send them free and tracked to any UK mainland address in 2 to 3 working days. Report any damaged or misprinted boxes within 10 days and we reprint or refund them. Keep one flat box as a spare when you fill them, in case one is creased during packing.

Display Boxes with Lids FAQs

More answers in Help

What does a display box with a lid cost?

From £0.25 a box. The price depends on size, board, print and quantity, and comes by email within one working day.

Does the lid stay attached?

On the fold back style, yes, it becomes the header. On the tear off style it comes away along a perforation.

Can I pack stock into the boxes myself?

Yes. The boxes arrive flat, you build and fill them, and close the lid for shipping.

Can the box be printed inside the lid?

Yes, and we recommend it because the inside of the lid becomes the header.

Will the lid stay upright on the counter?

Yes. It locks into a slot or tab so it stands behind the products.

Are lidded displays strong enough to stack?

In E flute they stack well inside outer cartons.

Can the lid have a window?

Yes. A clear film window lets warehouse staff and shoppers see the stock while the lid is closed.

What count per box is usual?

Common counts are twelve, twenty four and forty eight, but we size to whatever count you sell in.

Can the header be a shape?

Yes. The lid can be die cut so the header has an arch or a logo outline.

Is a tear off lid better than a fold back lid?

A tear off lid leaves a lower, neater tray. A fold back lid gives a taller header. It depends on the counter space.

Can I see the design before printing?

Yes. Every order includes a free proof showing the box closed and open.

How soon can lidded displays be delivered?

Production takes 5 to 7 working days after approval and delivery 2 to 3 working days.

Free design proof with every order. Nothing is printed until you approve it.
