What is a pop up display box?

A pop up display is a printed display that travels completely flat and locks into shape when you push the base or pull the sides. There is no tape, no glue and no instruction sheet. Pre-glued seams and a crash lock base do the work, so the display stands in the time it takes to unpack it.

Because it is flat until the last moment, a pop up is easy to post, easy to store and easy to hand to a stockist with a box of stock.

When is a pop up the right choice?

Choose a pop up when the display has to travel without you. If reps hand displays to shops, if you post them to stockists, or if you set up at markets and trade stands, the flat format saves space and the quick build saves the person at the other end from struggling with tabs.

Pop ups also suit launches and sampling, where a display might only be on show for a few weeks before a new design replaces it.

  • Posting displays to new stockists with the first order
  • Market stalls and trade shows where set up time is short
  • Product launches and sampling campaigns
  • Retailers who prefer displays that store flat

Which pop up styles are there?

The simplest is an open tray that pops up with a back panel. An arched or shaped header gives more room for the logo. A two tier pop up adds a raised step so the back row stays visible. A front window keeps products clean while still on view. All four can be cut to your product and printed in full colour.

How does a pop up compare with a fold back lid?

A fold back lid display ships closed and full; a pop up ships flat and empty. If your stock leaves you already packed inside the display, the lid style protects it in transit. If stock and display travel separately, or the shop fills it from their own stock, a pop up is lighter and cheaper to send. Compare with our display boxes with fold back lids.

Which board works for a pop up?

E flute is the usual choice: it folds cleanly, holds its shape and prints sharply. White card suits very light products and small pop ups for cards or sachets.

Heavy products are better on a fixed counter display, since the pop up mechanism is designed for lighter loads.

If you are unsure, send the product and its weight with your enquiry. We say on the quote whether a pop up suits it or whether a fixed build would serve you better, so you are not left with displays that sag after a week on the counter.

How should a pop up be printed?

Print the outside and the inside, because a pop up is usually open on top and the inner walls are visible. Keep text off the fold lines; the proof marks them clearly. Matt lamination looks calm under bright exhibition lighting, while gloss suits colourful consumer brands.

Built for the post

Flat pop ups fit large letter or small parcel cartons, so you can send a display to a new stockist with the first order of stock.

How do we size a pop up?

  1. Send the size of one product and how many should be on show.
  2. Tell us where it will stand: counter, table or shelf.
  3. We set the tray, the back panel and any tier to fit.
  4. We check the flat size so it fits the carton you plan to post it in.
  5. The free proof shows both the flat and the built size.

Allow for the shop too. A pop up for a card shop counter has to be narrow, while one for a trade stand can be wider and taller because it is the main thing on the table. Tell us both if the same display will do both jobs.

Can a pop up be posted flat in a parcel?

Yes, and we can size it for that. Tell us the carton or parcel size you use and we keep the flat display within it. That way a display can go in the same parcel as a stockist's first order.

What size should the header be?

On a pop up the header is often the only part above the products, so it carries the brand on its own. We usually make it about as tall again as the products in front of it. At markets and shows, where people look from further away, a taller header with one large word or the logo works better than a busy layout. In a small shop a shorter header avoids blocking the till or the shelf above.

Test the fold

We can send a plain sample of the build before printing on request, so you can check the action and the fit with your product.

What happens when I order pop ups?

You get a price by email within one working day. A designer then lays your artwork on the dieline for a free proof. Production takes 5 to 7 working days after approval. Read how to get a display accepted by retailers if you are sending pop ups to new stockists.

If you only need a handful for a launch, say so. Minimums are low and quoted per job, and a short run of pop ups is often the cheapest way to test a new stockist or a new product before ordering a larger batch.

How are pop ups delivered?

Pop ups are packed flat in outer cartons, which keeps the parcel small. We deliver free and tracked to UK mainland addresses within 2 to 3 working days of dispatch. Any display that arrives crushed or misprinted and is reported within 10 days is reprinted or refunded.

Yes. We keep your approved dieline and artwork, so a repeat order only needs the quantity and any changes to the print, such as a new flavour or a new offer on the header.

Small changes like these do not need a new dieline, so the proof comes back quickly.

Pop Up Display Boxes FAQs

More answers in Help

What does a pop up display box cost?

They start from £0.25 a box. The quote depends on size, board, print and quantity.

Does a pop up display need tape?

No. It locks open with a pre-glued base and tabs, so there is nothing to tape.

Can I post pop up displays flat?

Yes. They ship flat and can be sized to fit the carton you use for stockist orders.

Will a pop up hold glass bottles?

Light bottles, yes. For heavier glass we suggest a fixed counter display or B flute board.

Can a pop up have a shaped header?

Yes. Arches, logos and simple outlines can all be die cut.

Can a pop up have two tiers?

Yes. A raised step keeps the back row in view.

Is the inside printed?

It can be. We recommend it because the inside of an open pop up is visible.

How quickly does a pop up open?

In a few seconds. Push the base down and the sides lock in place.

Can I fold it flat again?

Most pop ups can be folded flat for storage and opened again.

Can a pop up have a window?

Yes. A clear film window on the front keeps products clean and on view.

Are pop ups good for trade shows?

Yes. They pack flat in a car boot and stand up in moments on the stand.

How long does production take for pop ups?

5 to 7 working days after you approve the proof, then 2 to 3 working days for delivery.

Free design proof with every order. Nothing is printed until you approve it.
