What is a food display box?

A food display box is a printed counter or shelf display for food that is already packed: bars, snack packs, sachets, biscuit packs and jars. It sits on café and deli counters, beside tills in farm shops and garden centres, or on a shelf in a convenience store. The pack protects the food; the display organises the packs and sells them.

Food counters are cramped and busy. A display that fits the space, keeps packs upright and wipes clean is one a café owner is happy to keep.

For small food producers, a display is often the difference between being stocked and being declined. A shop can say yes to a neat tray by the till far more easily than to a box of loose packs that needs finding space for.

Which food display styles do we make?

We size each one to your pack and the number you want on show.

  • Counter display with header: the everyday format for bars and snack packs by the till.
  • Shelf tray with front lip: a low tray that sits on a shelf and keeps packs facing forward.
  • Lidded display shipped full: you pack it, close it, and the shop opens it into a display.
  • Stepped display for jars: tiers that lift the back row of jars so every label shows.

The lidded style is popular with producers who deliver to shops themselves, because one closed case of packs arrives, opens and goes straight onto the counter.

Who uses food displays?

Snack and bar makers, coffee roasters selling sachets, preserve makers, bakeries selling packed biscuits, and farm shops supplying other farm shops. Many are small food brands winning their first stockists, where a neat display helps the product earn its place on the counter.

For loose wrapped sweets, a sweet display box or counter dispenser may suit better.

Coffee roasters often pair a sachet display at the till with bags of beans on the shelf behind, using the same artwork so the two link together.

What makes a food display sell?

Appetite and clarity. A clear photo or illustration of the food on the header, the product name in large type, and packs standing neatly in rows. Shoppers decide quickly at a food counter, often while waiting for a coffee, so the display needs to say what it is in a glance.

Fresh looking displays sell better than tired ones. Food counters are busy and displays get knocked, so it is worth ordering a few spares to replace worn ones in your best stockists.

Which board suits a food display?

E flute for most counter displays, B flute for jars and heavier packs, kraft card for natural and farm shop brands.

ProductBoardNote
Bars and snack packsE fluteLight, sharp print
SachetsE flute or white cardCompact display, dividers for flavours
JarsB fluteStepped tiers, strong base
Farm shop rangeKraft card or kraft faced E fluteOne or two colour print

Jars bring weight quickly, and a display that bows under a row of preserves looks poor. For jars we add a stronger base as well as the B flute walls.

How should a food display be printed?

Show the food. A photo or drawing of what is inside the pack works better than a logo on its own. Use the front lip for the product name and flavour. Gloss lamination is practical on food counters because it wipes clean. Kraft with dark ink suits artisan and farm ranges where a rustic look fits the product.

If you have allergen or dietary icons on your packs, keep them on the packs; the display should not repeat detailed claims.

Simple wording works best: what it is, what flavour, and one line on why it is good.

Wipe clean counters

Food counters get wiped often. Gloss lamination lets staff wipe the display without the print going dull.

How do we size a food display?

  1. Send the size of one pack, or one jar with its lid.
  2. Tell us how many should be on show and in how many rows.
  3. Say where it will stand: counter, shelf or near a till.
  4. We size the tray, lip and header with a small clearance.
  5. A free proof then shows the display at full size.

Packs such as crisps and pouches are soft and change shape, so we size the lanes generously and use a slightly higher front lip to keep them upright.

How big can a food counter display be?

Smaller than you expect. Café counters are shared with cake stands, card machines and cups. A display with a small footprint and some height usually wins over a wide, flat one. If you know the counter, measure the space you have been offered and send it to us.

Some cafés prefer displays they can move easily when cleaning. A light display with a firm base that can be lifted in one hand is more welcome than a heavy one that has to stay put.

Can one display hold several flavours?

Yes. Dividers give each flavour its own lane, and printed labels on the front lip show which is which. Put the best seller in the middle and newer flavours at the front edge.

Lane labels also help staff restock correctly, which keeps the display looking as you designed it.

Mind the chiller

Displays near fridges or in chilled areas can pick up damp. Tell us where it will stand and we choose a board and finish that copes.

How do I order food display boxes?

Send the pack size, count and number of displays. A price comes back by email within one working day, followed by a free proof. Printing and making take 5 to 7 working days after approval. If you are pitching a new stockist, read what shops look for in a display.

How are food displays delivered?

Flat in outer cartons, or as cases ready for you to pack if you chose the lidded style. Tracked delivery is free to any UK mainland address and takes 2 to 3 working days. Any display reported misprinted or damaged within 10 days is reprinted or refunded.

Store flat displays away from kitchens and damp so they stay crisp until use.

Repeat orders reuse your dieline and artwork, so a reprint for a new flavour is quick.
